Composer Götz, Markus
Difficulty level 3+
Evaluation level of countries D4 (German upper level)
Duration 10:10
Additional info/contents The German composer Markus Götz is a very precise observer and so it is that he often collects a lot of impressions during his travels, which inspire him to create a new work. This was also the case with his piece "Cabo Verde", which was written after a journey to the Cape Verde Islands (Cabo Verde) off the African west coast. In four parts, Markus Götz describes musical impressions of this group of islands, which is marked by both African and Caribbean influences.

"Islands in the Wind" paints a picture of untouched nature - how the islands are born from waves and wind. At first man lives in harmony with nature. In the second part "The Conquest" the immigrants appear with fanfares and weapons. They destroy the harmony. A storm symbolizes the clash of different cultures, in between the waves and the wind resound again and again. In the end, triumphant sounds of victory resound ... but who has won? The third part is entitled "The sad song". The old locals sing about slavery and poverty, emigration and exile. This part is a bolero, but not the typical Spanish bolero, but a slow, ballad-like bolero, as it is common in salsa music. As a contrast to this and as a solemn finale, the fourth part sounds "The Feast of Life", full of rhythm, dance and joy of life. And in the end there is only one thing left:
The waves and the wind...
As a special feature in this piece Markus Götz has integrated an instrument that is also air-powered, but is not a standard part of the wind orchestra: the accordion. It creates a quite extraordinary sound enrichment.
